Canonical computations of cerebral cortex.

The idea that there is a fundamental cortical circuit that performs canonical computations remains compelling though far from proven. Here we review evidence for two canonical operations within sensory cortical areas: a feedforward computation of selectivity; and a recurrent computation of gain in which, given sufficiently strong external input, perhaps from multiple sources, intracortical inpu...

Canonical circuits of the cerebral cortex as enablers of neuroprosthetics

“. . . each technical advance over the past century has reaffirmed that repeated patterns of structure and function are seen at every level, from molecule to cell to circuit, and that many of these patterns are common across cortical areas and species. In this context, the concept of a canonical circuit, like the concept of hierarchies of processing, offers a powerful unifying principle that li...

Canonical Bases for Algebraic Computations

We investigate, for quotients of the non-commutative polynomial ring, a property that implies finiteness of Gröbner bases computation, and examine its connection with Noetherianity. We propose a Gröbner bases theory for our factor algebras, of particular interest for one-sided ideals, and show a few applications, e.g. how to compute (one-sided) syzygy modules.

Computations in the deep vs superficial layers of the cerebral cortex.

A fundamental question is how the cerebral neocortex operates functionally, computationally. The cerebral neocortex with its superficial and deep layers and highly developed recurrent collateral systems that provide a basis for memory-related processing might perform somewhat different computations in the superficial and deep layers. Here we take into account the quantitative connectivity withi...
